The Week In Review - Greaver vs The News
TF2 Update Posted by Greaver, 18th January 2012
This is my weekly column on ozf which I will be cross posting here - enjoy and chuck me some feedback on the content

Welcome to Greaver vs The News for this week, the column would usually go live on Sunday but I have elected to leave it a day or two late this week so we could cover the awesome Kritzkast Lo-Fi Off Class Cup that we held over the last couple of nights and some exciting action from the US and EU too.

Judging by the number of servers being booked out of #ozf-help in the last week everyone is shrugging off their Christmas and New Year food fatigue and clans are starting to scrim full time again in anticipation of the upcoming OWL7 competition which is great news - remember if you want the best chance of getting a place in OWL7 you need to enter your team into our year round ozfortress league ladder so if you haven't already sign up here!

Darien has kindly trawled through our mentoring section and created an index with helpful subcategory's to make finding useful information even easier which has made an excellent resource even more accessible for everyone so make sure you check it out here

OnionS has released an update to his extremely handy whitelist assist application adding great new features such as the ability to search for that new hat to ban because noone should have it if you don't and ten customisable presets to make maintaining multiple servers even easier. This is an amazingly handy resource for server administrators so check it out here.

ozfortress News

Obviously the big news this week has been the ozfortress Kritzkast Lo-Fi Off Class Cup but we will get to that in just a sec because there has been some really good Highlander matches this week with Group B's Dim Sim Spacecakes losing to e-weasel gaming 2-0 only to defeat XBZS 2-0 three days later while Group C's GTSOM highlander team took on the ever polite Surf Infamous team and emerged victorious.

OZFL this week saw Dialup gain the upper hand to secure a close 2:1 victory over TOG while sSb pulled off a 2:1 victory as well against DefcoN

Round 71 - TITLE MATCH: iM defeats GTSOM! 2:0

Round 71 - TITLE SHOT: << defeats Winterfall 2:0

The main attraction this week was the Kritzkast Lo-Fi Off Class Cup which saw some interesting classlimits including no Scouts, Soldiers or Demos resulting in some amazing pyro and sniper action and of course some ingenious strats dreamed up to take advantage of the format.

20 odd teams fronted up for the competition including some extremely dedicated USA players braving 200+ pings to compete and it was awesome seeing how quickly some teams adapted to the format and used the the classlimits available to their advantage. For a run down on the seeds and of course the scores for each match check out the challonge.

Various shoutcasters stamped their personality's on the casting coverage of the competition with Agro from Kritzkast joining me for the first night, 1IVO and Tom Sawyer jumping in for the 4th round and semi finals matches and Comedian from VanillaTV joining No Mercy and myself for the Grand Final match too - the coverage is available via the links below and if you check out anything from my news column this week, make sure you start with the Grand Final because it was an incredible match with upsets aplenty that left the entire casting team speechless more than once.

nzfortress News

Now for some news from my side of the ditch, New Zealand has a large annual lan known as Auckmageddon and its 6th iteration coming up in February will host the largest TF2 lan competition New Zealand has ever seen so if you are a Kiwi that somehow found their way over here or an Australian with money to burn jump on over to the site because sign ups for the TF2 competition have just opened and there are 80+ nzfortress members attending already!

In the build up for the lan nzfortress recently hosted 'The Cyborg Cup', a 6v6 competition with the goal of finding New Zealands 'number one competitive team fortress 2 clan' which had some sweet prizes courtesy of Mad Catz and Tritton along with an exclusive sponsorship deal for the winning clan to attend the lan and defend their title.

YSW reformed for the competition and the lan and this week were crowned the Cyborg Cup champions after dominating the competition to earn that title, below you will find video coverage of the matches so check them out.

ESEA Invite League

I don't even know where to begin with this section. As I said last week things have been really tight and there are multiple contenders for the 3rd and 4th spots for the ESEA Invite lan taking place 45 days from now in Dallas Texas and the outcome of these matches will directly effect who the #1 seed for lan will go to out of Quantic Legacy and Classic Mixup.

The easiest way to do this is quote oPlaiD, then show you the results otherwise I cannot do justice to describing how close things have been in the Invite division at this critical part of the season.

Quote:
Quote taken from oPlaiD on natf2

If HRG wins their match against 51 they'll have more RF than Ducks unless Ducks gets a few rounds against Quantic, but if HRG picks up rounds against Experiment then it'll be even harder and harder for Ducks.

I didn't really look at Duck's chances enough earlier, since there's the possibility of a 3-way tie. If HRG beats 51 then lots of different things can happen. Of course, we play HRG before that match, so we'll know all the scenarios between HRG and Ducks before HRG and 51 play each other.

There's still a possibility of a three-way tie, where HRG, Ducks, and 51 are all 7-9, assuming HRG beats 51 and all three of the teams lose their matches to Quantic/Mix/Experiment.

In that case it'd come down to the rounds again. If HRG has more RW over Ducks, then they'd have the tie breaker over both 51 and Ducks, since they'd have the head to head against 51 and have more rounds than Ducks.

If HRG gets swept by Experiment and Ducks wins 2 rounds against Quantic (or a +2 round differential for Ducks in those two matches) then they'd be tied and we'd end up with a one-game playoff between the two teams to determine who gets the tie breaker. Of course, if Ducks wins that, or has more rounds than HRG, we'd end up with a 3-way tie.
At the start of the week things could have gone in multiple directions and all of the routes were headed the hell away from HRG getting a spot at lan but it seems the gods like to laugh at my predictions because High Roller Gaming has somehow snatched the 4th spot at lan!

Quantic Legacy will be over the moon that Mixup lost two matches this week which means they will head to lan with the #1 seed under their belt - here are the final rankings as they currently stand

Seed #1 - Quantic Legacy
Seed #2 - Classic Mixup
Seed #3 - The Experiment
Seed #4 - High Roller Gaming

And now for the VODs

And before we head on over to the European scene you have to check out eXtelevisions new weekly news show focussing on all sorts of different scenes - they are still naming it at the moment but given the improvements they made in just one week from the feedback from the first show it should be an awesome watch every week!

ETF2L Premiership

The European scene has been lit up over the last week with the Excello Sparkle Winter Warmup Open taking place, the top team earning a place for the Winter Warmup Invite bracket.

The Open tournament started with 64 teams which were steadily reduced to till only Karnage eSports were left standing above the gibs of their rivals after some crushing wins (2x 5-0's and a 6-1) and a hard fought battle against the tryharders (featuring Harbleu) ending 2:1 in Karnages favour. Karnage defeated Team Decerto 2:0 in the final but fortunately for Team Decerto CKRAS and relic decided to forgo the invitational so both Karnage and Team Decerto earned places in the Invite Bracket, seeding 7th and 8th respectively.

Most of the invitational games took place on the 16th, VanillaTV provided coverage and you can find the VODs below - I was going to run through the games but it will be a lot easier to just display the results and the vods below so you can choose which games you want to check out

I will update the thread and post below when I have confirmed details for the
final because there will definitely be VTV coverage of it.

There will be a small lull over the next few weeks on the international front but I will endeavour to bring you all the news I can people so tune in and chuck me some feedback if there are things you would like to see covered!

NZFortress 2011 Awards
Misc News Posted by The Announcer, 1st January 2012
Greetings underlings.

It appears that despite my best efforts of bringing about a global apocalypse, you cretins from the smallest country in the world at the ass-end of the world have managed to escape my clutches again. Therefore, let my voice lift you up in praise instead. Hoo-rah, congratulations on making it through another year without some backstabbing +w pyro frying you.

Happy New Year! I trust you have all had a lovely break away from your computers, and that you've ventured out into the woah-so-many-pixels-out-here 'real world' to get some sun (and/or horizontal rain if you live in Wellington). 2011 has been another huge year for NZFortress. With the constant updates from Valve to everyone's favourite hat simulator and the launch of newbie-friendly tournaments, we have seen a rise in active members, the return of a few amusing faces, and of course, our annual NZFortress Awards gala dinner. This is just as important, albeit perhaps not as glamorous, as the Oscars and Emmy's. The NZ Music Awards ain't got nothing on this.

Let's start with the NZFL 2 Premiership then, shall we?

NZFL2 Premiership Winners: fever
The Premiership had some issues with disbanding-team syndrome (holla at ya ECP) but that didn't stop fever from plowing through their opposition on a bi-weekly basis while playing in international competitions simultaneously, even without a bona fidé Grand Final they showed their dominance throughout the entire competition and as such were the strongest team in NZFL2.

NZFL2 Premiership Winners:
madjack
aze
combust
s0nics
tele
JT
Fat
spitty

NZFL2 Championship Winners: Bandcamp
Bandcamp played a very competitive season sitting near the top of the leader board with their rivals throughout the competition, Bandcamp and Nothing Special were so evenly matched that they had the exact same stats across the board by the end of it and Bandcamp wins the title by being both the tortoise and the hare. Sneaky larakins.

NZFL2 Championship Winners:
Kattex
The Yellow Dart
Personal Joke
Speare
Taffy
Greg Wong
Indus
Sublime

NZ Representative Team
This award was added to recognise the players that represented New Zealand internationally this year. They have faced all manner of issues, and yet still managed to put up a good showing against powerful Australian teams in the State of Origin 2.

NZ Representative Team:
Aze
mackz
Indus
jmp
Spectacular
frosty
Thorndyke
Greaver

NZFL Class Awards
Best in class during an NZFortress competition, this player displays excellence on the field as their class of choice

Class Award Winners:
Soldier: Combust
Scout: export
Demoman: The Yellow Dart
Medic: Aze
Utility: Xtra

Hellstorm Memorial Trophy
Best on field in an NZFortress tournament final to remember one of NZF's finest sons and one of New Zealand's most dominant gamers. For absolute dominance in the field of play, this player leads by example to help a team to sweet, rib-shattering victory.

Combust

There was debate as to whether or not this should be given out this year because there was no Grand Final for either division but when you talk dedication and utter domination in any match, Combust always comes to mind.

He has torn up the competition as soldier both at home and in Australia this year, even securing both the NZFL2 best in class for Soldier and Best Soldier (division 2) in the 5th ozfortress winter league, making him the obvious choice for the Hellstorm Memorial Trophy.

NZFL Players' Player
The player who's most respected by their fellow competitors.

Awarded for the player who has a fantastic attitude and who people just generally like. This player is easy to deal with, never has a rage and is respected by those that play both with and against him.

While this can't be said of everybody who has played a Team Fortress derivative over the last 15 years (QWTF was created in 1996, for those keeping score at home), there have been a few stand out players over the years who have had a substantial positive impact on the various communities. In military terms, these would be the sergeants in our overweight, pimply, fair-skinned army.

This year, one man has stood out above many, encouraging new players, building relationships here on the forums and within the game itself, and generally being an all-around good guy (I'm informed by the NZF lawyer panel that I'm not allowed to use the "c word" here).

This man has run tournaments, hosted PUGs until the early hours of the morning, I'm sure he has pissed his wife off more than once with the sweaty men that have invaded her house for a LAN, and been an admin that stood over all of you, smiling down with benevolence and love (and the occasional summary execution of upstanding members of our community like wowgold4u and holyviagraballs).

His name is Greaver.

NZFL2 Most Improved Player
The player who displayed the greatest improvement during an NZFortress competiton

An award given to the player who showed the greatest improvement during an NZFortress competition in all aspects of their game with a fantastic attitude towards improvement.

Derry

The votes were stacked in Derrys favour and it was easy to see why, his game-sense, deathmatch ability and calling have improved greatly during NZFL2 and he has earned the respect of his clan mates and their opposition in the process.

Video Genius Award
Recognition for making some of the best TF videos to watch, and giving us something to aspire to. These things take a lot of time and effort, and you have to have a pretty sweet attitude as there is the inevitable criticism that comes with doing these.

Both of these members already have the Video award but both have continued to create amazing content, this year especially, and as such we wish to recognise their contribution to NZFortress and their craft once again.

Decap
Obviously decap is world renowned for his impressive video production skills and this year was no different with decap releasing Tron Fortress, an amazing and unique TF2 video seen the world over.

Bonez
Bonez is an absolute genius with cinematography and near the start of the year he released my favourite frag video of all time, Bonez Presents: ozfortress winter league highlights - check it out if its the last thing you do.
Merry Christmas

Who will take the title of best state this year?

History has a funny way of repeating itself, I have heard mixed responses in the previous weeks about which two states would go head to head in the final but by and large most of those I asked said the same thing, Victoria vs New South Wales in the finals

Well they weren't wrong and here we are with two extremely strong teams looking to face off in the grand final - NSW having the distinct advantage of a second chance at victory should they fail they first time round like last year.

While writing this up I decided the best thing I could do would be approach one of the leaders of these teams for their thoughts on this Grand Final.

As such I present the NSW captain - Yuki

Greaver. Hey mate, feeling confident about leading your state into the Grand Final?

Yuki. Confident but not too confident to seem arrogant, I guess (contrary to my usual attitude, hah!).

Despite the score in our last meeting being 5-0 our way, I feel that we were much stronger on granary than them. Badlands is a map that can go either way since one team can just +forward and win because of it (hello all of Victoria jumping on my head on rollout).

Trolling aside, it should be a fun game - hopefully to play AND spectate.

Greaver. Confirmed cores for it?

Yuki. Usual bunch, I'll be on demoman, feresar and geo soldier (since aporia is usless and works alternate weeks EVEN THOUGH HE SAID HE WILL BE FINE TO PLAY ALL BUT ONE SOO GAME, It's ok geo is a good substitute), kriso and no mercy are scouting and crunch playing the medical assistance role.

Greaver. What strengths do you feel your team has over your opponents?

Yuki. I feel as a team we have more cohesion than the victorian line-up. More confident and stronger caller/leader in me (since that's what I do in my current team and have done for a long time), I feel I have the ability to know when to attack/fall back out of instinct which is definitely a strong skill to have, and be able to easily read any situation.

We also have some good dmers in our lineup (It's ok, BEFORE you have a heart attack, I am NOT talking about No Mercy). I feel when it comes down to the crunch (hehe) that we will win on phaseplay but NOT necessarily rollouts (imo in this game rollouts will be a diceroll, on badlands anyway since gravelpit will probably be the other map).

Greaver. So what do you expect you will have to watch out for?

Yuki. The main thing we will have to watch out for will be, as mentioned earlier, 4 or 5 players jumping on my head on rollout (which I will not be surprised to see since It's badlands and a pretty cheese but sometimes effective way to win a rollout).

Greaver. Yuki - in your last match up NSW came out on top, will that add to the pressure for the GF or just increase your confidence?

Yuki. Our last meeting was on a map that we definitely felt really confident/comfortable on. The fact that granary was eliminated first means Victoria knows this and are aiming to pick the seemingly more "diceroll' maps (viaduct/badlands, or maybe a gravelpit instead of one of those which isn't as diceroll) but if gravelpit was picked instead of one of those I think we'd feel much more confident.

There is some _mild_ pressure as we DID score 5-0 in our previous meeting, but not enough to cause any grief for any player. We're all fired up ready to play our best and hopefully come out with a win on the night.

Greaver. Having a second chance likely to lower the tension for your boys or will they use it as a chance to exert their dominance?

Yuki. Assuming we play our best I don't think we will need the second chance. While it is a nice buffer to have, It doesn't mean we will throw the first game or play less just because there's a "backup plan".

We will definitely make sure to play our best so we can aim to secure the win on the night.

Greaver. Given the maps left for choosing right now, they work to your advantages?

Yuki. As mentioned earlier, I'd say that viaduct and gravelpit would be our most favourable maps. Badlands may be a diceroll due to the fact of being able to roll on from a massive rollout win so quickly due to an entire bombing team being able to work successfully.

It's hard to say the outcome on any map right now since the only maps we have played eachother on have been viaduct (in scrims/warmup)and granary. Viaduct is a map where it is pretty easy to attack the point without uber and force the other team out if you do enough damage (since It is so open in the middle point), whereas gravelpit is a map that requires a bit more thinking going towards it and clean execution to ensure a good defence/offence. Regardless of the map, we won't let a map bring us down even if we feel it is not our strongest - we'll aim to play our best regardless of the map choices.

Greaver. Whats your thoughts on doing this every year?

Yuki. It's pretty fun I guess. Allows for you to play with other people that are not just in your team and you sometimes may be able to play a class you don't regularly play (I'm playing demo for this competition but i guess that doesn't count since i was a core demoman for two years, despite playing core soldier now).

It would be fun to participate in this every year - more competitions usually means more
media coverage which in turn HOPEFULLY directs more attention towards TF2 and maybe more people playing the game (preferably competitive).

Greaver. Good stuff - and finally, should I just stop hurting myself and not put NZ forward next year?

Yuki. *chuckles* I have decided I'm going to use some "bowt philosophy" here. If you said something like that to bowt, it would turn out something like this:

Greaver: "Bowt I'm playing shit"
Bowt: "Don't say that"

What bowt is trying to say is don't put yourself down. Even if you have a bad performance or two, or even more, don't get worked up over it. There's always a next time and there is always room to improve.

Never forget that the only way is up (ugh cliché used I'm DONE). So in turn i say to you, just try your best in the next State of Origin and be confident of winning (not losing!).

And there we have it folks - this should be an epic match up make sure you hit up that STV!

Son of Dad has created a teaser for this epic match up complete with Eric Bana!
