NZFortress Academy Interview: Avril

Welcome to our third interview with a player from the Australasian Team Fortress 2 community.

Our third interview is with none other than Avril who plays for fever both here in New Zealand and across the ditch at OZFortress.


Hey Avril, have you gone by any other names during your time playing competitively?

That's a pretty easy first question, other than Aze I don’t think I’ve gone by any other name for a period of time, just a random assortment of aliases.

Do you still play competitively? For which team?

I play competitively for fever (Div2 in OWL5) on and off at the moment.

Did you come from TFC or QWTF?

I don’t come from either of those games, the only FPS experience I have before TF2 was pub CS, TF2 is my first proper competitive game.

What clans were you in before Avril and what did you compete in?

Clans: lessthan3, empire, after effect, chaos, parallel, ysw

Competitions: Immolation 2, xlan 08, ngri, foosh, Ultiduo 4 (won that with Lottic), OWL5, NZFL2 and OZFL and probably a few others I can’t remember

Many of the older players remark that there isn't enough shit talking and full on rivalries anymore, do you think that has a positive or negative effect on the community?

I still think there’s shit talking going on and there’s definitely still rivalries, especially if you look in the lower divisions

For whether or not its positive I think its all good so long as its not in game, there's always going to be a degree of shit talking in every game no matter what, its pretty much unavoidable.

What made you want to get into competitive play?

I just really enjoy the game, the base game itself, even in the pubs, I just wanted to try out competitive and when I did it was really good.

How are you finding NZFL2? Do you like the Championship/Premiership setup?

I don’t think there are enough teams at the moment so I don’t think its necessary, but if there were more teams it would be good. If you look at OZF they have the most teams, but they all play within their division.

What about the unlocks? Is it refreshing playing in a vanilla competition?

Its a bit nostalgic, but I have kind of gotten used to how teams play now with the unlocks so while its refreshing its a little odd.

How do you feel about the updates to Team Fortress 2 such as Hats and Unlocks?

Hats - I don’t have anything against hats

Unlocks - I don’t think unlocks affect competitive play too much, and in general I think valve putting in the effort to add new content is really good, new content is new content and most of the unlocks don’t affect competitive play.

So if you had to choose, the current OZFL unlocks list or Vanilla + Med/Eq?

I honestly can’t see anything wrong with the current OZFL list, while the old way of playing was really cool, I think its good to have change, it keeps the game fresh.

How much time do you spend practicing as a team?

Haven’t done any full on practice sessions in a few months but during OWL5 we used to scrim 4 or 5 nights a week, but availability's have dropped including my own, that should change for OWL6 - maybe not for myself but for the team.

How do you feel about the American Gunboats bomber style which has worked its way into Australasian TF2 - Do you think its only prominent in the lower divisions where they can't deal with it?

I do believe that the higher divisions have a lot less trouble dealing with it than the lower divisions, mainly because they don’t expect it or can’t read the game as well. Its not so much aim but general skill level, for both aim and gamesense.

I think if you ignore the bombing aspect of it it has changed the roaming play style for the better overall, bombing is just a use for the class that lower level teams don’t utilise properly - higher level teams make better use of the roamer without bombing all the time.

Sweet man - Who are your top players and why?

I think generally everyone is on a similar level, combust has definitely come a long way from where he started, but I don’t think anyone holds the team down.

What about your top players from NZ/Aus?

Yuki is probably the best all round player, to be honest he could probably play any class and be good at it.

There are some really good players out there, but yuki, hes good at all the classes so hes probably the only one of note.

So Avril, Aim or Gamesense?

At the top level you need a high level of both, but at a lower level you can get away with high dm and no brain, at the higher levels unless you have decent aim as well as gamesense you won’t cope really well, but in saying that if you have good game sense you won’t stay in the lower divisions long because you shouldn’t be there.

Whats is your profession IRL?

Uni student studying communications
