Try building a farm above ground; it'll say you need soil, but it should work anyway. Alternatively, try hunting and fishing and trading for food. If you're fortress is young, you don't absolutely need farms.

It's nice to see some DF graphics with an eye to graphic design. The visuals are quite well done.

Perhaps you should consider a DF web comic series? Clearly there's a hunger for this type of thing. I love reading about DF experiences.
